Aleatico has its roots in central Italy, where the predominent style is made from dried grapes, is quite heavy and rich, often fortified and not unlike fortified muscats from north-east Victoria. Aleatico has been grown in Mudgee since Dr Thomas Fiaschi planted his vineyard nearly 100 years ago. At di Lusso we have revived the making of Aleatico after a notable absence. However, we have pursued a style that is modern, fresh and retains the wonderful aromatics of the grape variety. The vineyard is located immediately next to di Lusso and is being re-worked so that it remains fruitful long into the future.
The fruit was machine harvested from the di Lusso Estate vineyard – the fourth time we have used our own fruit. - and immediately crushed. The must was pressed, cold settled and the clear juice separated from the solids by racking. The juice was fermented at cool temperatures in stainless steel. The wine was bottled in November 2015.
The 2015 Aleatico exhibits the subtle variations that every vintage delivers. The grapes were picked a little less ripe than usual – in part due to the fragility of the canopy, and because this was the second vintage from this block. A little more sweetness was retained in the wine - at the expense of alcohol - which has produced a slightly lighter palate texture. The wine has a light ‘bubblegum’ colour, and there are lifted Muscat aromas – Turkish delight, rose water, gently spicy with cinnamon and clove. The wine is gently sweet, and has a medium weight palate. The sweetness that makes the wine off-dry but not cloying and there is a gentle dryness on the finish.
