Il Palio 2014
There is the modern tradition in Italy for producers to produce wines that are a blend of Sangiovese and French varietals.
Di Lusso Estate has taken up the challenge of this progressive winemaking blend to produce our own version. The name Il Palio pays homage to the iconic tournaments to be found in many Medieval towns in Italy.
The Il Palio blend selected for the 2014 release is Sangiovese (10%), Barbera (30%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (60%). As the di Lusso Estate vineyard does not grow French varietals, the Cabernet was sourced from an excellent Mudgee vineyard.. The separate parcels of fruit were fermented in open vats, pressed separately and transferred to separate older puncheons where they underwent malolactic fermentation and maturation. The wine was blended, fined and lightly filtered prior to bottling in May 2015.
This wine has a deep ruby red colour with bright red hues. The aromas, and indeed the palate, are an amalgam of Sangiovese’s earthiness, Barbera’s spicy cherry and Cabernet's blackcurrant. Although maintaining our preferred medium body and food-friendly style, this is certainly a more complex wine than it’s varietal components.
This wine should age well over the next five to ten years at least; developing further complexity along the way.
We’re confident that the 2014 il Palio will become a mealtime favourite, to accompany dishes ranging from meat pastas and pizzas to roast pork and beef stew.
