This variety has its origins in Tuscany, notably on the west coast island of Elba. Aleatico is recorded as being a particular favourite of Napoleon Bonaparte during his short spell on Elba. Aside from Tuscany, the variety is to be found in Lazio, particularly around Lake Bolsena near Rome (where it has attained DOC status) and as far south as Puglia.

Aleatico has its roots in Tuscany but has thrived most extensively on the Isle of Elba just off the coast of Tuscany. The wine from Elba is usually made from dried grapes, is quite heavy and rich, often fortified and not unlike fortified muscats from north-east Victoria. Aleatico has been grown in Mudgee since Dr Fiaschi planted his vineyard nearly 100 years ago. At di Lusso we have revived the making of Aleatico after a notable absence. However, we have pursued a style that is modern, fresh and retains the wonderful aromatics of the grape variety. The vineyard is located immediately next to di Lusso and is being re-worked so that it remains fruitful long into the future.

Approximately 5.2 standard drinks, 13.3% alcohol.
