Pinot Grigio 2015
Pinot Grigio is one of Italy’s most widely planted varieties and best known white wine styles. (The French style, from the same grape variety but harvested when riper is called Pinot Gris). The grey colour reference in the name is a reflection of the skin colour at harvest which turns from bright green to a dull mauve-grey. This year, the fruit was sourced from Molong, a high altitude sub-district of Orange.
The fruit was hand picked at lower Baume levels to produce a true Grigio style. It was crushed, pressed, cold settled and the clear juice separated from the solids by racking. The juice was fermented at cool temperatures in stainless steel to dryness. The wine was then stabilized and clarified prior to bottling. The wine was bottled in August 2015.
The wine is true to its classic varietal characteristics of pronounced citrus aromas and fresh apple and pear flavours. The palate has crisp, fresh acidity, the flavours are long and the finish clean. It is a light, uncomplicated wine, made in the true Pinot Grigio style. Pinot Grigio is not noted for its cellaring potential and is usually best enjoyed in its youth when fresh.
The 2015 Pinot Grigio can be enjoyed as an aperitif, but is at its best when accompanying light sea food dishes such as salt and pepper squid.
