Ode to Jakeson
It is with great sadness that Lu and I have to tell you that Jake, our beloved retriever - and Head of Emotional Intelligence at di Lusso Estate - has died, aged twelve.
We have composed this humble ode in his memory.
Lu searched for a pup all over the place,
Looking for one that suited our space.
She decided that “Jake” - eight years old at that time -
Should join our family, though ‘”well past his prime“
It took a while to get there - Queensland I mean,
To collect the boy, sight unseen.
“Had a tough life” we were quietly told,
“But good with people, no matter how old”
We searched in vain for a name that was apt
Several we tried, and several we scrapped.
That suited his character - there just wasn’t one
So Jake he remained, or Jakey, or Jakeson
Within a week, our Jake had learned the drill
Of what his real job was. Not just run of the mill
Nibbling on pizza, to see if they’re cooked
But to check that each experience was as good as it looked!
Jakeson would leave the house at ten, ready for work
Receiving a pat, accepting a perk
But sharpish at four, he’d head back home,
In need of more food, and indeed of a comb!
Our pup had a knack of finding a place
Close to the kitchen, just in case?
He always found a particular place to lie in
You just couldn't get past, no matter how thin!
As we got home, Jake would roll in the grass.
And ask for a pat, before we could pass
Ignoring the cat, he’d go lie in that slot,
That Lu always called ‘Jakie’s dog spot’
So life continued, with pup in the lead
Smooching the diners, true to breed
Then, feeling thirsty, into the reeds. To emerge in a while
Not shaking his tail…just happy to smile
As Jakeson got older, signs of his hard life did show
Knees that would bend, but with pain, and slow
Defying the odds, and the thoughts of his vet
Our pup kept on going, whatever the threat
But then, we found a bump on his bum
That just kept on growing, not hurting – just numb
Then one day he just couldn’t get up
His eyes said it all - time was up for our pup
We’ll never forget him, dear Jakey boy
To those he met, he gave such joy
His quiet, elegant and casual seriousness
Hid a higher, more noble being, nonetheless
